Keep Your Pet Safe this Valentine’s Day

We know your pets are your family, so naturally In Home Pet Sitters didn’t forget them this Valentine’s Day! The ASPCA offers advice on how to keep pets safe over the holiday.

Flowers can be a beautiful Valentine’s gift, but if you are sending arrangements to cat owners, be weary that all types of lilies are poisonous to cats. If you have a cat, be mindful that you don’t receive any lilies in the arrangements given to you. Roses, while beautiful, have thorns which can be harmful when stepped on or swallowed by your pet.

While most dog lovers know that chocolate is life-threatening to dogs, it is important to remember this rule applies even on holidays. Anything containing the ingredient xylitol (often found in gum) can also be dangerous to your pet’s health. So stick to pet-specific treats and keep the candy to yourself this Valentine’s Day.

While we think it’s cute when our pet takes a sip of our champagne or other alcoholic beverage, be aware that even just a little bit can cause them to get very ill, as they are much smaller than people.

Valentine’s Day often means lit candles so make sure they are where your dog or cat can’t get to them as they can easily knock them over and start a fire.

If you’re unwrapping gifts from that special someone make sure that Styrofoam, cellophane, ribbons, and balloons remain out of reach of your pets. While it may be entertaining to watch them play with these, it can mean danger for your pet.

You can avoid putting your pet in danger and a costly trip to the vet this February 14th by following these simple steps. Your local pet sitters wish you and your pet a safe and happy Valentine’s Day!
