Celebrating Thanksgiving With Your Pet

Thanksgiving is the perfect opportunity to count our blessings with friends and family. Our furry, four-legged friends like to be a part of the celebration, too, whether it’s a big family gathering or quiet meal at home. Here are our best tips for enjoying a happy and healthy Thanksgiving with your pet.

Hold the turkey bones! It seems only natural to want to give your dog leftover turkey bones to chew on, but they’re actually dangerous. Turkey bones are small and soft enough to break and splinter into pieces that can injure your dog’s throat and intestinal tract. A little bit of cooked meat is OK as a treat, but raw meat can carry food-born illness even to cats and dogs.

Keep an eye on the treats. Thanksgiving parties bring lots of treats like many holidays. Make sure that candy bowls are elevated and appetizer platters are set above where your pet can reach. Some foods like various cheeses and vegetables are harmless when consumed in small quantities. Candies, chocolate, certain nuts, raisins, onions, and garlic should never be eaten.

If your pet becomes anxious around groups of people, set aside a comfortable space. Simply make this quiet space available for your pet to retreat to when it needs a break from the festivities or consider temporarily sequestering him or her until your guests leave. Some pets find noise machines soothing.

Treat your pet to a special activity. It’s easy to forget about your pet in all of the holiday hustle and bustle. Create some some time before and after your Thanksgiving activities with your pet. A walk or play session before company arrives gives your pet some peace of mind and a walk afterwards might feel good after a big meal.
