Join the American Humane Society (AHS) this October by celebrating Adopt-A-Dog Month. Since October of 1981, the AHS has raised awareness during this month about the joys of dog adoption. Three-four million dogs are currently waiting for their forever homes, and, sadly, many are euthanized. If you are searching for your next four-legged best friend, consider opening your heart and visiting your local animal shelter. Here are a few of our best tips for adopting a dog:

Be honest with yourself. The American Humane Society suggests we really ask ourselves if we’re ready to adopt a dog. Dogs surrendered at shelters have experienced so much change that shelter employees want to make sure the new owner is ready for a commitment that lasts the pet’s lifetime. Can you tolerate some hair and pet slobber? Will you still want a dog if you have children or are anticipating a move? These are all good questions to ask yourself.

Look for a companion with a similar energy level. Do you live an active lifestyle or work long days and come home looking for relaxation? For a sustainable match, look for a dog with similar needs. Some breeds of dogs need a lot of exercise to remain balanced, while others can do with less activity.

Spend enough time with the dog to determine a good fit. Play with your new pal and take him or her outside on a walk. Some shelters even allow people to take dogs home for an evening to see how it meshes overnight.

Even if you are not able to add another furry family family member to your home, you can still participate in Adopt-A-Dog Month. The AHS encourages current dog owners to spay, neuter, and ID their pets. This is also a good month to contact your local shelters and find out if they need any pet supplies.
